What is squalane, and how do you use it in skincare?
Squalane is a lightweight skincare oil made from squalene. Squalene occurs in human skin oil (sebum) but breaks down quickly when it meets air and light. Squalane is the saturated, stable form of it, which is why it sits in moisturisers, serums and as a standalone squalane oil. On skin it leaves a soft, non-sticky film that helps keep moisture in. On a label it reads Squalane. It is a supporting ingredient, not an irritating active, so it sits comfortably next to retinoids, acids, vitamin C and niacinamide, in the morning or the evening.
Most people do not need a separate squalane oil. Check whether your moisturiser already lists Squalane, and give the routine a few weeks. As with any new product, test a small area first.
Is squalane the same as squalene?
No, even though the names look almost identical. Squalene is a natural component of human sebum and breaks down faster in air. Squalane is the saturated version, which is much more stable, and that is the one used in skincare. The table is the quick decoder for an ingredient list.
| On the label | What it means |
|---|---|
| Squalane | The saturated, stable form and the ingredient you will find in most skincare. |
| Squalene | The unsaturated form, a natural component of sebum. Not the same as squalane and less stable in air. |
| Olive Squalane, Sugarcane Squalane, Plant-derived Squalane | A source claim. The same ingredient with its raw material in front, for example olive or sugarcane. |
| Squalane Oil | A product name for pure squalane as an oil. Sold on its own or used as an ingredient in creams. |
| Squalene from shark liver oil | The traditional raw material. Many brands now use plant sources. If it matters to you, look for a source claim such as olive or sugarcane. |
What does squalane do for skin?
Squalane is an emollient, an ingredient that leaves skin feeling soft and smooth. It lays a thin film on the skin that holds on to the moisture that is already there. It feels light and does not leave a heavy film, which is why it turns up in so many moisturisers and serums.
Squalane does not exfoliate, does not brighten and does not change how quickly your skin gets shiny. It does not replace an active. That is exactly why it is a good supporting player: it joins the routine without adding irritation.
Squalane or hyaluronic acid: which one do you need?
Both help skin feel soft, in different ways. Hyaluronic acid draws water in, squalane holds moisture in with a light oil film. You do not have to pick a winner, the two layer without trouble.
| Squalane | Hyaluronic acid | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | An oil-type ingredient (emollient) | A water-binding ingredient |
| Typical product | Moisturiser or face oil | Serum |
| How it feels | Soft, supple | Light, fresh on damp skin |
| Where it goes | After the serum, before or inside the moisturiser | Before the moisturiser, on damp skin |
| Together? | Yes | Yes |
If your skin feels tight after washing, a moisturiser with either one is a sensible start. Why that happens is covered in skin feels tight after washing, and a close relative on the shelf is panthenol.
Can you use squalane with retinol, vitamin C, acids and niacinamide?
Yes, with all of them. Squalane is not an irritating active, so it does not extend the adjustment period for a retinol and does not count as a second acid. You only decide the step.
| Combination | Together? | How it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Retinol or retinal | Yes | Evening. Retinoid first, then squalane or the moisturiser with squalane. |
| Vitamin C | Yes | Morning. Vitamin C first, then squalane or moisturiser, sunscreen last. |
| AHA and BHA | Yes | Acid on clean skin, then squalane. It is not a second acid. |
| Niacinamide | Yes | Both are supporting players and layer in either order, thinner one first. |
| Azelaic acid | Yes | Azelaic acid first, then squalane or the moisturiser. |
| Hyaluronic acid, ceramides | Yes | Hyaluronic serum on damp skin, then squalane, moisturiser last. |
| Sunscreen | Yes | Squalane never replaces it. Sunscreen is the last step in the morning. |
Which pairs genuinely clash is covered in skincare ingredients you can't mix, and you can test any two actives in the ingredient combination checker.
Should you use squalane in the morning or at night?
Either works. Squalane has no fixed time of day, it goes wherever the product with squalane belongs. The rule behind it is the one from skincare routine order: thin before thick, water before oil. A squalane oil therefore comes after the water-based steps. Whether the moisturiser goes before or after it is a matter of taste.
| Situation | Step | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Your moisturiser contains squalane | Same as the moisturiser, morning and evening | No separate step needed. |
| Separate squalane oil, evening | After serum or retinoid, before the moisturiser | A few drops are enough. You can also mix them into the moisturiser. |
| Separate squalane oil, morning | After vitamin C or serum, before sunscreen | Optional. Sunscreen stays the last step. |
| Squalane oil as a finishing step, evening | Last, over the moisturiser | Works too. There are two schools of thought, pick the one that feels better on your skin. |
Is squalane greasy, and which skin is it for?
Squalane is an oil, but it feels light and is usually described as non-sticky. It is still an oil, though: if your skin gets shiny quickly, start with a moisturiser that contains squalane instead of extra drops, and see how it feels over a few days. Why skin shines by midday is explained in why your face is oily by midday. If your skin runs drier in cold months, a few drops in the evening fit better, see why skin is drier in winter.
Do you need a separate squalane product?
Probably not. Answer two questions about what is already on your shelf.
Pick an answer for each question.
Is squalane safe for sensitive skin?
Squalane is generally considered well tolerated. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review expert panel concluded in 2019 that squalane continues to be a safe cosmetic ingredient, as quoted by the brand Paula's Choice. No ingredient suits everyone, though. Test a new product on a small area for a few days and drop it if your skin reacts. Easily irritated skin is also why Baselit gives new users only one irritating active at a time. More on pacing in how long skincare takes to work.
How does Baselit handle squalane?
Baselit builds routines from a selfie: five areas scored 0 to 100, a routine with morning and evening slots, and for new users at most one irritating active at a time. Squalane is a supporting player and not one of the actives the routine is built around, so Baselit does not recommend a squalane oil for its own sake. If you are unsure whether a product fits, send Mia a photo of it and she tells you whether the actives clash with what you already use. Pregnancy is part of that check.
