What is panthenol, and what does it do in skincare?

Published 19 October 2026Updated 19 October 20266 min readWritten by Marco Mori

Panthenol is the alcohol form of pantothenic acid, better known as vitamin B5. In skincare it works as a humectant: it holds water in the top layers of skin and leaves skin feeling softer and smoother. On a label, Panthenol, D-Panthenol, DL-Panthenol, Dexpanthenol and Provitamin B5 all point to the same family of ingredient. It is a supporting ingredient, not an irritating active, so it sits comfortably next to retinoids, acids, vitamin C and niacinamide, in the morning or the evening.

Most people do not need a separate panthenol product. Check whether your moisturiser or cleanser already lists it, and put your effort into using the routine consistently. Pharmacy ointments with dexpanthenol are a different product category with their own leaflet, and this guide is not about them. As with any new product, test a small area first.

Is panthenol the same as dexpanthenol and vitamin B5?

Close, but the names are used loosely. Panthenol is the general name. Dexpanthenol is its D form, the same ingredient under a pharmacy-style name, and it is the one the skin converts to pantothenic acid, which is the actual vitamin B5. "Vitamin B5" or "provitamin B5" on a jar is a marketing way of saying panthenol. The table is the quick decoder for an ingredient list.

Panthenol names on an ingredient list
On the labelWhat it means
PanthenolThe general name. The alcohol form of pantothenic acid.
D-Panthenol, DexpanthenolThe D form of panthenol. Same ingredient, the name pharmacies and some brands prefer.
DL-PanthenolA mix of the D and L forms. Common in cosmetic formulas.
Provitamin B5, vitamin B5 (front of pack)Marketing wording for panthenol. Strictly, vitamin B5 is pantothenic acid.
Pantothenic acid, Calcium pantothenateRelated, but not panthenol. The acid or its salt.
Panthenyl ethyl ether, Panthenyl triacetatePanthenol derivatives. Same family, listed under their own names.

What does panthenol do for skin?

Once on the skin, panthenol is converted to pantothenic acid. As a humectant it draws water in and holds it in the upper layers, which is why moisturisers, toners and gentle cleansers use it. A 2022 review of dexpanthenol in skin care describes it as improving skin hydration, reducing water loss through the skin and being generally well tolerated.

The visible result in a moisturiser is mostly comfort: skin feels less tight and more supple. It does not exfoliate, brighten or change how oily skin gets, so it is not a substitute for an active. That is also why it is a good supporting ingredient: it adds without adding irritation.

Can you use panthenol with retinol, vitamin C, acids and niacinamide?

Yes, with all of them. Panthenol is not an irritating active, so it does not stack on top of a retinoid's adjustment phase or count as a second acid. The only thing to decide is the step: it lives wherever your moisturiser, toner or serum that contains it lives.

Panthenol next to other ingredients
PairTogether?How it fits
Retinol or retinalYesEvening. Retinoid first, panthenol in the moisturiser after it.
Vitamin CYesMorning. Vitamin C first, panthenol in the moisturiser, sunscreen last.
AHA and BHAYesAcid on clean skin, panthenol moisturiser after it. It is not a second acid.
NiacinamideYesBoth are supports. Many formulas contain the two together.
Azelaic acidYesAzelaic acid first, then the moisturiser with panthenol.
Hyaluronic acid, ceramidesYesLayer them: hyaluronic acid serum on damp skin, then the moisturiser.
SunscreenYesPanthenol never replaces it. Sunscreen is the last step every morning.

For pairs that really do clash, see which skincare ingredients you should not mix, or test two actives in the ingredient combination checker.

Should you use panthenol in the morning or at night?

Either. Panthenol has no preferred time of day, so it goes wherever the product that contains it goes. A panthenol moisturiser works in the morning under sunscreen and in the evening after your active. The full order of steps is in the order to apply skincare.

Panthenol or hyaluronic acid: which one do you need?

Both are humectants that draw water in, and they layer without trouble. In practice they show up differently: hyaluronic acid is the one people buy as a standalone serum, while panthenol is more often a supporting ingredient inside a moisturiser, toner or cleanser. If your skin feels tight, a moisturiser that lists either one is a sensible start, and you do not need to pick a winner. Details on the serum side in the hyaluronic acid guide. Many toners also carry panthenol, see do you need a toner.

Do you need a separate panthenol product?

Probably not. Answer two questions about what is already on your shelf.

1. Does your moisturiser or cleanser list Panthenol or Dexpanthenol?
2. Does your skin feel tight or dry after cleansing?

Pick an answer for each question.

Is panthenol safe for sensitive skin?

Panthenol is common in products made for sensitive skin and is generally well tolerated, but no ingredient suits everyone. The same 2022 review notes that allergic or irritant reactions to dexpanthenol have been reported. Test a new product on a small area for a few days, and stop if your skin reacts. Reactive skin is also the reason Baselit starts new users with a single irritating active, see how long skincare takes to work for pacing.

How does Baselit handle panthenol?

Baselit builds routines from a selfie: five skin areas scored from 0 to 100, a routine with morning and evening slots, and at most one irritating active at a time for new users. Panthenol is a supporting ingredient, not one of the actives the routine is built around, so Baselit does not recommend a panthenol product for its own sake. If you are unsure whether a product fits, send Mia a photo of it and she tells you whether the actives clash with what you already use. Pregnancy is part of that check.

For the neighbouring ingredients, ceramides, niacinamide and centella are the next reads.

Frequently asked questions

Is panthenol the same as vitamin B5?
Almost. Panthenol is the alcohol form of pantothenic acid, which is the actual vitamin B5. The skin converts panthenol to pantothenic acid, and brands often write provitamin B5 on the front of the pack.
Is panthenol the same as dexpanthenol?
Yes, for practical purposes. Dexpanthenol is the D form of panthenol and the name pharmacies prefer. DL-panthenol is a mix of the D and L forms and is common in cosmetics.
Can you use panthenol with retinol?
Yes. Panthenol is not an irritating active, so it does not add to a retinoid's adjustment phase. Use the retinoid in the evening and a moisturiser with panthenol after it.
Can you use panthenol with vitamin C?
Yes. Put vitamin C on in the morning, then the moisturiser that contains panthenol, then sunscreen. Panthenol does not need its own slot.
Is a panthenol cream the same as a pharmacy ointment?
Not automatically. A moisturiser that lists panthenol is a cosmetic product. Ointments sold in pharmacies with dexpanthenol are a different category with their own leaflet, and how to use them is a question for your pharmacist or doctor.
Should I use panthenol in the morning or at night?
Either. It has no preferred time of day, so it goes wherever the product containing it goes. In the morning, sunscreen comes after it.
Is panthenol better than hyaluronic acid?
Neither is better. Both draw water in and they layer well. Hyaluronic acid is usually bought as a standalone serum, panthenol usually sits inside a moisturiser, toner or cleanser.
Is panthenol safe for sensitive skin?
It is common in products made for sensitive skin and generally well tolerated, but allergic or irritant reactions have been reported. Test a new product on a small area first and stop if your skin reacts.
