Why is my skin drier in winter?

Published 19 September 20265 min readWritten by Marco Mori

Short version: cold air holds less water, and heated indoor air holds even less. Skin loses water to dry air faster than it replaces it, so the same routine that worked in September suddenly leaves you tight by November. Four swaps fix most of it: richer moisturiser, gentler cleanser, fewer acid nights, and something occlusive at night.

One trap worth knowing: a hyaluronic acid serum on its own, in very dry air, can leave skin feeling drier rather than plumper. It needs water underneath and a cream on top.

What actually changes in winter?

Two things at once. Outdoors, cold air simply holds less moisture. Indoors, heating drops the humidity further, often well below what skin is comfortable with, and you spend most of the day in it. Add hot showers, which strip more than warm ones, and the routine that was fine in autumn is now slightly too light.

Skin does not become a different skin in December. The demands around it change, so the routine changes with them and then changes back.

What do I swap?

four changes, in order of how much they help

Moisturisergel or gel-creamcream with ceramides, thicker at night
Cleansergelcream or milk, lukewarm water
Exfoliation2 to 3 nights1 night, or pause entirely
Last night-time layernone neededan occlusive balm on the dry patches
Sunscreendailystill daily

The sunscreen row is the one people quietly drop in winter. Daylight does not stop in November, and the tone work from summer comes undone fastest without it.

Why can a hydrating serum make it worse?

Humectants such as hyaluronic acid hold water where there is water to hold. Applied to dry skin in a dry room with nothing on top, they have very little to work with and the layer can end up feeling tighter rather than softer. Apply to damp skin, then seal with a cream. That is the whole instruction, and it matters most in winter.

Should I stop my actives?

Not necessarily, but reduce the load. Acids are the first to cut back, since they thin the surface's tolerance for dry air. A retinoid can usually stay if you drop a night and add more cream. If washing your face has become an event, see why skin feels tight after washing first, because the cleanser is usually the bigger problem.

Does Baselit notice the season?

Not by calendar, by scan. The weekly re-scan reads hydration as one of five areas, and if it drifts down the routine shifts towards more support rather than more actives. The focus only changes after three consistent scans, so one dry week does not trigger a rebuild. If you tell the app at a check-in that your skin feels tight, that goes straight into what it suggests next.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my skin drier in winter?
Cold air holds less water and heated indoor air holds even less, so skin loses moisture to the air faster than it replaces it. The heating usually matters more than the weather outside.
What should I change in my winter routine?
A richer moisturiser, a gentler cleanser, fewer acid nights and something occlusive at night on the dry patches. Keep the sunscreen exactly as it was.
Should I still wear sunscreen in winter?
Yes, daily. Daylight does not stop in winter, and work on tone comes undone fastest without it.
Why does my hyaluronic acid serum make my skin feel tighter?
Because a humectant needs water to hold on to. In dry air, applied to dry skin with nothing on top, it has little to work with. Apply on damp skin and seal with a cream.
Should I stop using retinol in winter?
Usually not. Drop one night a week and add more moisturiser first. Acids are the step to cut back before a retinoid.
Are hot showers bad for skin?
For the face, yes, in the sense that they strip more than warm water and leave it flushed and tighter. Lukewarm and brief is the fix.
Does a humidifier help?
It addresses the actual cause, which is dry indoor air. Whether it is worth it depends on how dry your home is, but the reasoning is sound.
When should winter dryness be looked at by a doctor?
If skin cracks, weeps, itches persistently or does not settle after two weeks of a simple rich routine, that is beyond what a cosmetic routine should be solving.
