Do you need a toner?

Published 19 September 20265 min readWritten by Marco Mori

Short version: no, a toner is not a required step. It becomes worth a slot when it is carrying something: hydration, niacinamide, an exfoliating acid, or a soothing extract. The old stripping kind, the one that stings and smells of alcohol, is a step worth dropping entirely.

The question is not "toner yes or no" but "what is in this bottle, and does my routine already have that somewhere else".

What does a toner actually do now?

The word covers three very different products, which is most of the confusion.

Which one is on your shelf?

read the label, then decide
If the label saysIt isKeep it?
alcohol denat. high in the list, "purifying", "deep clean"astringentno
glycerin, hyaluronic acid, panthenol, "hydrating"hydrating layeroptional, pleasant
glycolic, lactic or salicylic acidan exfoliant in disguiseyes, but count it as your acid
niacinamide, centella, heartleaf, panthenoltreatment toneryes, if you are not getting that elsewhere

The mistake worth avoiding: an acid toner is an acid. If you use one and also apply a retinoid the same night, that is two demanding steps stacked, not a toner plus a treatment. Count the toner as the active it contains.

Where does it go in the routine?

Straight after cleansing, on skin that is still damp, before serums. Hands rather than a cotton pad, unless the product specifically wants a pad. Pads waste most of the liquid and add friction that skin does not need. The rest of the sequence is on the routine order page.

Do I need a toner for oily skin?

Not in the way it is usually sold. Stripping oil off aggressively tends to be followed by a shinier afternoon, which is the loop described on the midday shine page. A gentle niacinamide toner is a reasonable thing to own. An astringent one is the classic own goal.

What does Baselit do with toners?

The app treats the watery step as an optional slot, not a mandatory one, and it never recommends a product for the sake of filling it. If a toner you already own carries an active, the product check reads the ingredient list and places it where it belongs, including flagging the case where it collides with something already in your evening.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a toner?
No, it is not a required step. It earns a place when it carries something useful such as hydration, niacinamide, an acid or a soothing extract. The old astringent kind is worth dropping.
What does a toner actually do?
It depends on the bottle. A hydrating toner adds a thin watery layer that helps the next steps spread. A treatment toner delivers an active. An astringent toner mostly removes oil, which is rarely a good plan.
Where does toner go in a routine?
Straight after cleansing, on damp skin, before serums. Apply with your hands rather than a cotton pad unless the product asks for one.
Is an acid toner the same as an exfoliant?
Yes. If it contains glycolic, lactic or salicylic acid, count it as your exfoliating step and do not stack a retinoid on the same night.
Do I need a toner for oily skin?
Not an astringent one. Stripping oil off is usually followed by a shinier afternoon. A gentle niacinamide toner is a more sensible choice.
Can I skip toner entirely?
Yes. Cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen is a complete routine. Everything else is an addition, not a requirement.
Toner or essence, what is the difference?
In practice very little. Essence is the K-beauty word for the same watery step, often slightly thicker and more hydrating.
Should I use a cotton pad?
Usually not. Pads absorb most of the product and add friction. Hands are cheaper and gentler, unless the product is designed to be swiped.
