What does centella do for skin?
Short version: centella, sold as cica, is the comfort step. In cosmetic terms it makes skin look calmer and more even, and it is one of the few actives with essentially no rules: morning or evening, alongside anything, no adjustment phase. Expect a difference in appearance over 4 to 8 weeks.
It is not a treatment and it will not carry a routine. Its job is to sit next to a demanding active and make the whole thing more comfortable to keep using.
What is centella, and what is cica?
Same plant. Centella asiatica is a herb used in Korean formulas for decades, and "cica" is the marketing short form. On an ingredient list it appears as Centella Asiatica Extract, or as one of its isolated components: Madecassoside, Asiaticoside, or the blend labelled TECA.
A quick sanity check for a shelf: a product with centella near the top of the list and no fragrance is doing what it claims. A product with centella in the last three positions is a label decision.
What does it actually do?
In cosmetic terms it is about comfort and evenness of appearance. Skin that reads irritated after a strong active, after a day in the wind, or after too much exfoliation looks calmer and more uniform. Where does it go in the routine?
As a thin essence right after cleansing, or as the moisturiser at the end. Both work. It layers with acids, retinoids and vitamin C without separation rules, which is unusual and is most of its appeal.
