How do you wear sunscreen under makeup?

Published 19 September 20266 min readWritten by Marco Mori

Short version: sunscreen is the last skincare step and the first makeup step. Let it sit for two minutes before anything goes on top. Use about two finger lengths for face and neck, and press the next layer on rather than rubbing it in.

Almost every complaint about sunscreen under makeup comes from one of three things: not waiting, rubbing instead of pressing, or a formula that does not get on with your primer. All three are fixable without giving up either product.

Does sunscreen go before or after moisturiser?

After. Sunscreen works as a continuous film on the surface, so anything rubbed over it thins and breaks that film. Moisturiser first, sunscreen last, then makeup. The full sequence is on the routine order page.

If your moisturiser and sunscreen never seem to agree, using a lighter moisturiser, or skipping it on days when the sunscreen is hydrating enough on its own, is a legitimate simplification.

How much do you actually need?

The usual guide is two finger lengths of product, squeezed along the index and middle finger, for face and neck. It is more than most people use and it is the difference between the protection on the bottle and something much lower. If that amount feels heavy, the fix is a lighter texture, not less product.

the three complaints and what actually causes them
ProblemUsual causeFix
Pilling, little rollslayering too fast, or a silicone primer over a watery sunscreenwait 2 minutes, press rather than rub, match textures
White castmineral filters, usually zinc oxidea chemical or tinted formula, or a lighter layer built up twice
Slides off by noontoo much product too fast on oily skingel-cream texture, blot before reapplying

How do you reapply over makeup?

01
Blot first

A tissue over the shiny areas, no rubbing. Fresh product on top of hours of sebum is what causes patchiness.

02
Use a stick, a cushion or a powder

All three sit on top of makeup instead of moving it. A powder is the weakest of the three in practice, because almost nobody applies enough.

03
Press, do not sweep

Stamping motions keep the makeup underneath where it is. Sweeping moves both layers around and leaves gaps.

04
Every two hours outdoors, not indoors

Reapplication is for a day in daylight. A day at a desk away from a window does not need the same discipline.

Is the SPF in my foundation enough?

On its own, in practice, no. The rating on a foundation is measured with the same thick layer used for a sunscreen test, and nobody wears foundation that thickly. Treat any SPF in makeup as a small bonus on top of an actual sunscreen, not as the sunscreen itself.

Why does this step matter more than the rest?

Because it protects everything else you are doing. Work on tone in particular is undone quickly without daily protection, which is why the timeline page gives sunscreen no weekly number: its absence shows up as every other step moving slower. More on formulas and quantity on the SPF page.

What does Baselit do here?

Sunscreen is a fixed final morning step in every routine the app builds, not an optional extra, and the app assumes it is worn daily. That assumption is also why the evening always contains an oil-based removal step: something has to take the sunscreen off again.

Frequently asked questions

How do you wear sunscreen under makeup?
As the last skincare step and the first makeup step. Apply it, wait about two minutes so it sets, then press the next layer on rather than rubbing it in.
Does sunscreen go before or after moisturiser?
After. Sunscreen needs to be an unbroken film on the surface, and anything rubbed over it thins that film.
How much sunscreen should I use on my face?
About two finger lengths for face and neck. Less than that and the number on the bottle stops describing what you are actually getting.
Why does my sunscreen pill under makeup?
Usually because the next layer went on too soon, or because a silicone-based primer met a watery sunscreen. Wait two minutes, press rather than rub, and keep textures similar.
How do I reapply sunscreen over makeup?
Blot the shine first, then use a stick, cushion or powder in pressing motions. Sweeping moves the makeup underneath and leaves gaps.
Is the SPF in my foundation enough?
Not on its own. The rating assumes a much thicker layer than anyone wears in foundation. Treat it as a bonus on top of a real sunscreen.
How do I avoid a white cast?
White cast comes from mineral filters, usually zinc oxide. A chemical or tinted formula avoids it, or build a lighter layer in two passes.
Do I need to reapply if I am indoors all day?
Not to the same degree. The every-two-hours rule is for daylight and outdoors. A day at a desk away from a window is a different situation.
